Say Cheese

By Carmen

I have spent months trying to get Annley to look at the camera whenever I would take a picture.  This week she has learned that the combination of me having the camera in hand and the phrase "say cheese" are and indication that she should look at the camera and be a total ham.

This is great except for when I am trying to take candid shots or record something she is doing.

I can be across the room and turn the camera on to get a picture and she'll somehow hear the little beep that means the camera is on.  Then she'll stop whatever she is doing, turn around, sit down and smile.

Here Comes Santa Claus

By Carmen

Last week Tyler, my mom and I took Annley to see Santa.   Santa just happened to be in my home town, for one night only, while we were in town.

We figured then was as good of a time as any.  I was pretty sure Annley would do okay. She's never been afraid of strangers of course we've never handed her to an old guy with a full white beard and dressed from head to toe in red.

When we got to the gym (yes that is where Santa Claus decided to stop for his one night debut in Gray) we pointed out Santa and clapped at him.  She seemed fine at this point and was chirping and squealing her highest squeals in his general direction.

Then came the moment of truth....my mom carried Annley and started to hand her to Santa and before the exchange was ever completed Annley spun around and started kicking her feet and crying. Having family with her helped make these pictures possible.

IMG_3840 IMG_0591

Annley was given a candy cane as a reward for her brave attempt to sit with Santa so I let her have some of it.  It is now her new favorite candy (its the only candy she's ever had). Our last stop was to an antique store where Annley charmed the old ladies who owned the shop and where she found a chair to rest in for a few seconds.

We have enjoyed getting ready for Christmas and we hope all of you have too.  Merry Christmas from Tyler, Carmen and Annley.

Getting Tucked In

By Carmen

I love my husband.  He happens to be the Most Amazing Person Ever - just ask him.

He has a wonderful sense of humor, is quite intelligent, has tons of patience with me and loves me more than anything on Earth.

I know this because on nights he stays up late he tucks me in. The first time this happened was within the first few months we were married and he was just goofing off.  I told him he could consider it practice for when we had kids. Not only is he now the best tucker-inner ever it is now a pretty consistent thing.

Last night was the most fun being silly together we'd had in a while.  He told me he was staying up late and I said "Good.  I wanted to go to bed early any ways." He followed me up the stairs to the bedroom and tucked me in and told me he loved me.  Then I remembered I left my water bottle down stairs and asked him to go get it for me.  He laughed and asked me how old I was and if there was anything else I wanted.  So playing back I said "yes, I want to hear either a bed time story or you can sing me a bed time song."  He looked at me like I was crazy, with a request like that who wouldn't.  He went down stairs and got my bottle of water then I remembered I hadn't had my bedtime hug so he untucked me, hugged me, gave me a kiss, tucked me back in and then looked around the room for a book.

He found one of Annley's books "I Love My Daddy Because" its a book about how daddies take care of their kids. Tyler changed the words from "Daddies" to "Husbands" and "Children" to "Wives".  Here is how the summary of the book ,on the back cover, read when we changed the words.

Cuddle up and take your wife into the world of animals with this adorable concept book about husbands and wives.  The clever text borrows simple phrases from a wife's experience to show that animal husbands take care of their wives too.  Illustrated in soft, beautiful colors, this is the perfect book for sharing on a loving lap.

We were laughing so hard.

After that I went to bed and he went upstairs to work.

Desperately Needing Sleep

By Carmen

I was starting to think Annley was getting to the age where she would sleep more than 4 hour stretches. Saturday night Annley didn't sleep very well at all. She was up every 2 hours. I was hoping Saturday night was just a fluke. Now I'm hoping that last night was a fluke too. Annley woke up at 2am to eat which is completely normal for her. What isn't normal is me getting her back to sleep, putting her back in her crib and her popping up screaming.

The worst part is I didn't go in and turn off the baby monitor so my poor husband was woken up around 3am, came to check on us, and give me some relief from Annley's screaming. Unfortunately that didn't go over very well with Annley and only made her more upset. She and I went through this routine until about 4am. She is now sleeping and I am too awake to go back to sleep. I'm really looking forward to a nap today

Two Houses, Both Alike in Dignity

By Tyler

My mom suckered me into participating in our Stake Choir's Christmas program, which she's in charge of.  She was very cunning about it.  I actually thought that I had gained the advantage in our negotiations as she worked to recruit me.  I was wrong.

Originally my mom had hounded Carmen about joining the choir.  Carmen told my mom that she would consider joining the choir if I joined as well and so for several weeks after Carmen's concession my mom made passing comments to me about what a wonderful contribution my voice would make.  I dismissed the pandering as simply a mother's natural tendency to believe that their children are capable of every possible good thing under the face of the sun.  I would smile and nod in agreement, of course, because who doesn't eat up those kinds of compliments?  But I was also wary.

Her comments grew more insistent over the weeks until compliments became suggestions.  Suggestions then became insistence which then became pleading for me to join the choir.

I began to wonder.  How bad could the Ward Choir possibly be?  I know for a fact that there are some very talented-looking people in our Ward.  I wondered why none of them seemed to be on my mom's guilt-trip hit-list.

Finally my mom put away subtlety and broke out the last, most desperate weapon mothers have in their arsenals; mom-tears.

Now, I know that it makes me sound absolutely criminal to have refused to be a part of the choir until it brought my mother to tears.  But, please, be rational before tossing around accusations about me being a mommy-hater.  Mommy's can become sick with power, just like anyone else.

So we entered into negotiations.  My terms were simple.  I would participate in the Ward Choir program if the following terms were met:

  1. I wasn't expected to sing any solos
  2. There was no expectation for me to participate beyond the program I was needed for
  3. I was allowed to dress however I wanted for rehearsals
  4. I was allowed to bring water to practice
  5. I couldn't be reprimanded for goofing off

Sure, it meant that Carmen had to participate too, but my terms were accepted and I marveled at my ability to expertly negotiate goof-off privileges.  That is, until Sunday came and I realized the breadth of my mom's deception.

Have you ever been exposed to something that you instinctively knew was wrong?  It's like all your senses are suddenly in on a joke that your brain hasn't quite picked up on yet.  It's like taking a big gulp of milk that's slipped way past its expiration date, or finding yourself deeply embedded in the women's unmentionables territory at Walmart.  Your whole body seizes up on the instinct that something you've been exposed to has irrevocably, irreversibly soured.  And your poor brain is so preoccupied with trying to sort out what's happened to your body that it doesn't yet realize it's about to have to deal with a whole tidal wave of rotten information.

The choir was fine, before I confuse any of you.  All those talented-looking people turned out to be very talented-sounding people and so all is well with them.  But something was amiss.  Something was... not... right...

"Why is Dad here?" I thought to myself.

There was Dad, sitting on the back row with all the other lower-octave types.  Now, a man sitting with men is never anything to be alarmed at, unless that man is a man whom you've never heard sing a note in your life - whom you know to have a reputation for loathing being involved in any public performance of any kind - and those men are the bass section of a choir.  Then, obviously, Hell has frozen over.

I moved to the back row.  I am a baritone - a sort of LaZboy armchair variety of pseudo tenor - and therefore I was to sit with the real tenors who sat several feet away from the bass section.  My mom was already talking, as she always does, and was addressing the choir.  I leaned over toward my dad.

"What are you doing here?"  I whispered to him.  I expected him to explain this was some sort of display of affection and support for my mom and her calling, but instinct was still rolling a ball of doubt around in my stomach.  My dad instead looked at me with a sort of sad, sagging look.  He cocked an eyebrow and raised a single finger and pointed it directly at me.

"What? Me?!  What do you mean?"

"I told your mother I would sing in the choir if you sang in the choir.  I didn't think you'd cave."

D'oh.

It all came together.  I had been the single barrier of protection my wife had before I relented her to the choir.  I sold my dad's comfort and dignity for goof-off privileges.  I was the unwitting king-pin in my mother's master design!  I had no idea my mom had been so crafty in orchestrating my wife's and my father's demises at my own hands!

So, in the end, kudos to Mom for using plots and craftiness to get us to participate in church activities that promote public shaming.  In retrospect it was really very Shakespearean of her.

Fleece Safari

By  Carmen

IMG_3703

A few weeks ago Tyler's mom said she was going to make Annley a blanket.  She does this for all her grandchildren for their birthday.

We were out running errands one day and Lori (Tyler's mom) decided to go ahead and look at some fleece.  Annley was with us so we started showing her the fleece to see what she would choose.

First was a pink and gray fleece; Annley stared at it blankly. The next choice was purple with yellow stars; another blank stare.   Lori picked up the 3rd choice which was blue with cute little safari animals on it.  Annley erupted into squeals, giggles and kicked her little legs as hard and as fast as she could.  Lori and I were of course laughing and decided to repeat the experiment.  The results were the same.

When we went to have the fleece cut Annley tried to grab the fleece and the squeals and giggles started again.  Once the fleece was cut we gave it to Annley to hold.  She grabbed it with both hands, buried her face in it and squealed into it.  She continued to do this until we checked out.

Lori decided not to wait to give it to her for Christmas since she loves it so much.

Annley still loves the blanket and still squeals at it.  I'm glad Lori suggested we let Annley pick out her blanket.

A Place called Pumpkin Town

By Carmen

Earlier this week Tyler's mom offered to take Annley and I up to Saluda, NC to look around and to enjoy the scenery.  I was more than willing to go so we packed up the car with all the baby essentials and hit the road.

Annley spent the first 1/2 of the trip screaming but calmed down once we reached Table Rock.  The scenery was absolutely breathtaking.  The leaves were vibrant shades of yellow, reds and oranges.

100_5929100_5933

We left Table Rock and stopped in Pumkintown. Its a small little town out in the middle of nowhere with a few shops.  While we were in Pumpkin Town we decided to take advantage of a photo-op with the pumpkins. We walked around for a little while until a little restaurant, Aunt Sue's opened.  Then we had lunch.  Lori (Tyler's mom) and I discovered the best chocolate mint pie in the world.  I have tasked myself to discover the recipe.

100_5939100_5935

The rest of the drive to Saluda was beautiful and peaceful.  I was able to get out and take some pictures along the way.  I was standing on the side of the road at one point taking a picture and I had a few thoughts..."I am so grateful Heavenly Father created this world for me."  "How can people look around them and see all the beauty that can be found in the world and deny that there is a Creator? "

I am so grateful that Lori took time out of her day to share a drive that she has so often enjoyed with me. It was so nice to get away from everything, have a few minutes to think and get a little perspective on life.

Family Pictures

By Carmen

Tyler's mom is an awesome photographer so when the time came for family pictures we asked her to take them.

We decided to go to the park since it is so beautiful here this time of year, not to mention Annley loves to be outside.  Well, we got to the park and Annley was distracted by EVERYTHING which made taking pictures nearly impossible.

Luckily we were able to get in a few really good pictures. We love our little goof.

Daddy? or Kitty?

  By Carmen

IMG_3143 n530234438_1358216_947

Lately Annley has been saying Mama, Dada, Keke (kitty), Duh duh(doggie). She has done a very good job at distinguishing what things are what until this morning.
This morning I asked Tyler to hold Annley while I ironed our clothes. Tyler was not wearing a shirt.  Annley started grabbing his chest hair and whispered keke which is how she says kitty.

Apparently only kitties should have fur.

Trick or Treat

By Carmen

I'm beginning to really like Halloween quite a bit. This year was especially fun because I had more people to dress up than just me.  This year I had the opportunity to plan costumes for me, Tyler and Annley.  Tyler was such a good sport.  I gave him a few options. #1 We could be a family of bumblebees #2 we could be a family of Ladybugs or #3 we could be Nursery Rhyme Characters.   Needless to say he chose Nursery Ryhme Characters so I was "Little Bo Peep", Tyler was "Little Boy Blue" and Annley was "The Little Lamb".  Tyler and I decided since Or Little Lamb was too small to walk we could forgo our props (crook and horn) and just carry Annley.

100_5783 Our first Halloween adventure was to the ward Trunk or Treat.  Annley had a lot of fun watching all the kids run around. I think she had more fun being passed from person to person. This was when Tyler and I  discovered without Annley we just looked like pioneers.

100_5786

The party started at 6:30.  This picture was taken at 7:30.  Apparently Annley partied a little too hard.  It was really cold that night so Tyler and I decided it was best if we skipped the actual Trunk or Treating.  Instead we went home and put our little lamb to bed.

IMG_3676

My mom made Annley's lamb costume and couldn't wait to take her Trick or Treating. Personally I felt a little awkward going since there were 3 adults and a baby.  It ended up being a lot of fun so I'm glad we went.

Who looks more excited?

She likes to move it move it

By Carmen

Annley and I were in Georgia last week visiting family. Tyler joined us Friday night.

Wednesday Annley started scooting around on her belly, my brothers call this move the "Combat Carl".  Thursday she started getting up on all fours and rocking back and forth.

Obviously I was really excited but I was also hoping she would hold off until Tyler was able to join us.  He loves being present for every milestone or at least being able to come home after work and seeing what Annley has accomplished during the day.  I knew he'd be really disappointed if he missed her first day of crawling.

Friday morning she stated rocking back and forth and swinging both of her knees forward.  That's when she figured out she was mobile. I cheered her on but I also made little comments like; "You know daddy would really love to see you crawl when he gets here tonight."

Tyler called to say he wouldn't get in until around 9 and my heart sunk.  I was sure he would miss the big event.  Annley normally goes to bed around 7 but Friday night she took a nap at 7.  Tyler got to the house around 9 and she hadn't crawled yet so I wanted him to see what she had learned.  I put her down and she crawled right up to Tyler.

We were all shocked and super excited. I was soo happy Tyler was able to be there for the first time she crawled.  Personally I think Annley was just waiting to show off for her daddy.

Wizard of Oz (from "Election: The Musical")

By Tyler

This is actually last musical performance:

Wizard of Oz - Palin, McCain, Biden, Obama

I'd like to hear from you about what musicals you'd like to see our famous performers star in before election day.  Photos of these actors are not in short supply and I'd love for some feedback.

Also, we've changed our settings to allow anyone to comment, whether or not you have a Blogger account so, if you couldn't leave comments before, please feel free to now.

Spectacular, Spectacular

By Tyler

I've noticed something interesting lately.  A lot of readers and writers here on Blogger have been finding other blogs to read through their own network of blogging friends. There's a pretty healthy bunch of great family and friends that Carmen and I feel privileged to be connected with and we want to hear from you about some of your favorite blogs to read!megaphone-761540

So let's hear it!

Post a comment with a short list of a few of your favorite blogs.  I'm kind of hoping ours might be on the list (hint, hint) but really I'm very interested in seeing how many of us are reading the same blogs.

5 Generation Celebration

By: Carmen

This weekend Annley and I had quite a bit of fun.  We went to Pembroke North Carolina to visit family.  I haven't been there to visit for 7 years.

IMG_3535 IMG_3533

While we were there Annley and I were able to take a few 5 generation pictures with the women in my family. Annley was a total ham.

We were getting ready to sing "Happy Birthday" to an Uncle who was out of town, via video camera.  Can you see the family resemblances?

We only got to visit for a day and we were sad to go.  We are looking forward to going back for another visit soon.

Gorillas in the mist

Annley was able to spend some quality time with Uncle B. one morning while we were in Georgia.  Here's a peak at some of the fun they had together.

Bryan asked me if Annley would be scared of the mask.  I told him to try it and see.  Well, as you can see she loved the mask.

What's in the Box?

By Tyler

One of the bright points of living with the folks (temporarily - let's not forget that bright point) is that Carmen and I live in the epicenter of Kneisly family activity.  It wasn't too long ago that I only found out my Kneisly-related news through other people's blogs or through family prayers.  I tell you, nothing delivers  hard-hitting family news quite like asking for God's blessing on something you "forgot" to announce to the rest of the family before you started praying about it.

"...and please bless all the under-privileged children who are coming to stay a week with us with absolutely no parental supervision or means of getting their own food..."

Huh?  What?!

The best part is that everyone else not giving the prayer has to sit silently and wait for prayer to be over before they can explode with their attorney-style questioning.  Also fun is knowing that while you're still muttering out a prayer, everyone else's eyes have flown wide open at the shock of the news-without-details you just dropped on them; everyone starts to silently communicate by eye contact trying to figure out if anyone else has heard about the news, until everyone consigns to the fact that they'll have to wait until prayer's over to get the details which is the point all eyes move to the prayer giver in an effort to laser-beam-vision them into hurrying up with the "amen".  Which is a pins-and-needles sensation if there ever was one.

But I digress.  There are no under-privileged children staying with us and the last time news was delivered to me like this was when Mom announced Marlyse's and Kenny's pregnancy.

So now I would like to play a new game in which someone monopolizes on their privileged information.  In this game I take advantage of the fact that our nearest Kneisly relatives are no closer than 2000 miles away.  Here's how the game works:

I show you this...

100_5764

And you have to guess what it is.

This week's package is going to Marlyse.

Feel the pins and needles?

My Fair Lady (from "Election: The Musical")

By Tyler

This week's entry:

Sarah Palin & John McCain - My Fair Lady

I know it seems like I'm picking on Palin quite a bit, but as Lynette pointed out - she's an easy target.  Next week we'll see a change up.

Looking forward to your reactions.

What the Elephants Were Doing

By Tyler

ATTENTION!  All cautious mothers who want to protect their little blog-readers from animal-kingdom-related nastiness should have them moved to a safe distance.  Unless they're into this kind of thing.

===============================================

Our family went to the zoo last Saturday.  It was our first visit to the Greenville Zoo - a small zoo with an admission fee of only $6 per adult.  This was Annley's first visit to any zoo and we were excited to get pictures of the event.

There were monkeys...

IMG_3416

There were Kookaburra...

IMG_3404

There were giraffes which Annley loved...

IMG_3380 IMG_3381

IMG_3373

There were snakes and lizards which Annley tried communicating with...

IMG_3360 IMG_3361

And all other kinds of watching and playing...

IMG_3408 IMG_3423

And then... There were the elephants...

At first we were delighted to see the elephants!  They were so big with their goofy ears.  There was a crowd to see them!  People would toss zoo-approved food to the elephants and laugh and laugh...

Suddenly something happened that made everyone stop laughing.  Stop everything because we couldn't believe what we were seeing...

IMG_3347

How do I put this in blog-friendly terms???

"Annley?  Don't be scared!  The one elephant is having trouble doing number 2 and so his friend is... helping!"

To the disbelief and amazement of all the zoo-goers, the "friend" of the first elephant actually did remove a football-sized piece of waste from his buddy's rear-end.  He then reveled in it by tossing it all over his own back.

I never realized the animal kingdom had proctologists.

DMV Dialogue

By Tyler

No trip to the DMV is ever complete without being subjected to the circular logic of attendants.  I submit as evidence the following exchange:

"Sir, it seems that your license was suspended in 2006."

"Suspended?  Are you sure?  Can you tell me the exact date of the violation or what the traffic violation even was?"

"No sir.  Our system doesn't have any of that information."

"You're saying the department of motor vehicles doesn't have any information on why they're asking me to surrender my license."

"No sir, except that you must surrender your license and are required to pay a reinstatement fee of $100 before you can be allowed to get a new license."

"Ma'am, I hate to argue but I know for a fact that I've taken care of the violations I've had in the past two years."

"You know for a fact?  Do you have receipts or other documents on your person that could prove said facts?"

"Well... no.  I left my house thinking I was a law abiding citizen.  Why would I need paperwork for that?"

"Sir, you're going to have to either surrender your license and then return here with your paperwork proving your violation was taken care of, or you're going to have to pay a reinstatement fee of $100."

"You understand that if I surrender my license I can't drive home to get the paperwork that proves that I don't owe you $100, right?"

"I get that a lot."

"Fine.  Here's $100."

"Thank you very much sir for your patronage!  Would you like a courtesy print-out of your violation so that you can confirm the information you claim to have that proves the violation was already taken care of?"

"Wait, what?!"

"It's our way of making your experience with the DMV easier."

"Which is why you didn't give it to me before I gave you my money?"

"Correct.  Now, before I can reinstate your license, it seems there's an issue here with the forms of identity you've provided me.  Your W-2 needs to be from the last calendar year."

"Why?"

"Because that's our policy.  You're going to have to go home and bring us a more current W-2."

"I can't go home, you have my license.  And what exactly is your policy that says that I have to go home and bring back another W-2."

"The policy says that we can't accept a W-2 from years prior to the previous tax year as forms of identification.  Sir, you need to step out of line if I'm not going to be able to help you finish your transaction."

"But I came with a lot of other proof!  I brought my marriage license, my birth certificate, a current bank statement, a current paystub..."

"If only you could've been as thorough with your traffic violations.  Sir, please step out of the line."

"...And you're telling me that I have to go home because I brought a W-2 from the wrong tax year.  My Social Security number doesn't change from year-to-year.  Why does it matter what year the W-2 is from?"

"You Social Security number?  Oh.  Wait.  Yes.  I see now.  So you're not using your W-2 to prove your current address.  I understand now.  Sir, you're fine.  I have enough documentation here to process your license."

"Oh, well that's great.  Thank you."

"Not a problem.  That will be $25."

Leaves of Fall

By Carmen

IMG_3155 (2) IMG_3193

The weather here has started to cool off enough that Annley and I can play outside.  We both love going on walks so I thought Annley would enjoy playing outside.  I took a bag with a blanket, some toys for her to play with & a book for me to read. Then we walked out into the yard.  There was just enough breeze that it tousled Annley's hair.  She loved it and started talking while l read.

 IMG_3167IMG_3201

IMG_3175

We stayed outside for about an hour.  During that time  Annley discovered leaves.  I was very surprised when she picked up a leaf and didn't put it directly into her mouth.  Instead she inspected it very carefully, looking over every inch of it. After inspecting it she carefully squeezed it and it crinkled and that's when she found her new favorite toy.  That's when she put the leaf in her mouth.  Now when we go out to play, she inspects the ground looking for leaves to play with.

IMG_3215 IMG_3221

The other day I took her to a tree with some low branches so she could play with leaves that wouldn't crumble upon her "fragile" touch.  That same day was rather windy so I picked up a leaf, got Annley's attention and let the leaf go in the wind.  She had the cutest look of confusion when she realized the leaf was gone. I kept releasing leaves into the wind until she caught on to what I was doing and then she just laughed.
